Privacy Policy

1. Our quiet commitment

Memories Around is a map of moments — yours, and other people's. We do not sell your data, we do not run advertisements, and we do not use your memories to train AI models. This policy explains what we collect and why, for the mobile app and this website (the "Service").

2. What we collect

Account

An email address and a display name. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your email address from them, and nothing else about your account there. You may add a photograph and a short bio.

Memories

• What you wrote, and any photograph you attached.
• The spot you pinned it to, and the place it belongs to, if any.
• When you posted it.
• The mood you gave it, whether it is public, and whether it accepts comments.

A new memory starts public unless you make it private. The choice sits in front of you as you write it, and you can change it afterwards. A public memory is visible to other people looking at that part of the map, along with your display name and photograph. That is the point of the app, and it is always your choice per memory.

Photographs are stored in public storage buckets, which means the address of an image is not itself a secret. Keep that in mind for a photograph you would not want seen even by someone holding its link.

What you do in the app

• Comments you write and memories you like. Both are visible to other people, with your display name.
• The memories and places you save. Only you see these.
• People you block, and anything you report, with the reason and any note you add. The person you block or report is not told who did it.
• Your settings: notification preferences and the feed radius.

Business listings

If you list a place, we collect what you enter about it: its name, address, category, description, photograph, opening hours, and contact details such as a phone number, website and social accounts. A listing is reviewed before it appears, usually within a week, and once approved it is public. Enter business contact details, not personal ones.

Subscription

Which plan you are on and how often it renews. Payment is handled entirely by the App Store or Google Play — we never see your card or bank details.

Location

While you use the app, your location is used to centre the map, to show the memories and places around you, and to pin a memory where it happened. To find what is nearby, the app sends your position to our server with the request. We use it to answer that request and do not keep a history of where you have been. The only location we store is the spot you pin a memory or a listed place to.

Background alerts are a Premium feature, off until you switch them on. When they are on, your phone watches a limited number of places near you, using the operating system's own region monitoring, and tells you when you walk past one. When you have moved far enough, the app asks our server for the places around your new position, in the same way as above. Switching the feature off, or taking away the permission, stops it and clears the watched places.

Crash reports

When the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a report with technical details: the device model, operating system, app version and what went wrong. These reports are for fixing bugs and are not used to identify you.

3. How we use it, and why we may

• To run the Service you signed up for: showing your memories and the public ones around you, keeping your account working across devices, your subscription, and the alerts you switch on. This is necessary to provide the Service.
• To keep it safe: finding and stopping abuse, acting on reports, and fixing crashes. This is in our legitimate interest, and in yours.
• To answer you when you write to support.
• Location, photographs and notifications are used only with the permission you grant on your device, and you can take it back in your device settings at any time.

4. Who else processes it

We do not sell personal information. We use a small number of providers to run the app, each of them bound to use the data only to provide their service:

• Supabase — database, accounts, file storage and sign-in emails.
• Apple and Google — sign-in, and subscription billing.
• RevenueCat — subscription state.
• Mapbox — map tiles. Its telemetry is switched off.
• Bugsnag — crash reports.

Some place photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and are loaded from Wikimedia's servers, which see the request the way any website would. Some place details come from OpenStreetMap.

Some of these providers are based outside the European Economic Area. Where data leaves it, the transfer is covered by the safeguards the GDPR requires, such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

We may disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.

5. How long we keep it

• Your account, memories and everything attached to them are kept until you delete them.
• Deleting a memory removes it and its photograph. Deleting your account removes your profile, memories, photographs, comments, likes, saves and settings — see deleting your account.
• Reports are deleted along with the account that made them, or with the memory or comment they were about.
• A place you listed as a business stays on the map after you delete your account, no longer linked to you. Write to us if you want it removed.
• Backups roll off on their own schedule, within 30 days.

6. Security

Data travels over TLS and is stored on managed infrastructure. Access to it is limited by rules in the database itself, so the app can only reach what your account is allowed to see. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise.

7. Your rights

You can edit or delete any memory at any time, change what is public, and delete your account from inside the app. You may also ask us for a copy of your data, for it to be corrected, or object to how we use it. We are the data controller for the purposes of the GDPR, and we operate from the Netherlands. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or the authority where you live.

8. This website

The website sets no tracking cookies and runs no analytics or advertising. Its fonts are served from our own site. The password-reset and email-confirmation pages talk to Supabase to finish what you started in the app.

9. Children

The Service is for people aged 13 and over, or older where local law requires it.

10. Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change affects how we use data you have already given us, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
